The operating company decides, and its terms are on your confirmation

Every segment is run by a company with its own written terms, and those terms are on the confirmation it issues to you. They differ from one segment to the next, sometimes sharply: a small guesthouse operation on a five night piece and a company running a sixteen night line do not carry the same risk and do not write the same clauses. Read the confirmation you actually hold rather than a general rule, and ask this office if a clause is unclear.

The shape most of these terms take

Typically a deposit becomes non-refundable at booking, a larger share falls due some weeks before departure, and the whole figure is due at a stated point closer in. Cancelling earlier usually costs less than cancelling later, and this is a statement about how these contracts are written rather than an offer from this office. If the operating company cancels

It owes you what its terms say it owes you, and this office will put the case to it in writing and stay with it until there is an answer. Where a company offers alternative dates the office puts the choice to you rather than accepting on your behalf. Where a company will not do what its own terms require, the office says so plainly to you and does not pretend it has more leverage than it has.
